Is your relationship expert right for you?
There was a recent study by an American Psychological Association, stating that couples come to the therapy too late and thus couple’s counseling doesn’t work. Dr. Toni Coleman disagrees with that. She discusses how to find the best relationship expert and what to look for in a relationship expert that is right for you.
WHEN TO CALL A RELATIONSHIP EXPERT FOR HELP?
Dr. Toni Coleman, a relationship expert says: “When it feels too late (laughing). There was a recent study by an American Psychological Association, stating that couples come to the therapy too late and thus couple’s counseling doesn’t work. I disagree with that. I do think some people wait until things are so bad, and there is so much difference between them, and so much hurt, that it is very difficult to find their way back. Hardly ever do couples come for a healthy check up.
The best time to get the help of a relationship expert is when you feel like:
- You can’t sit down together
- You can’t talk about some of these things
- Things are heading in the wrong direction
- You don’t seem to be able to stop them
- It’s not feeling good
“A relationship expert will help you communicate with each other; sort things out and most importantly resolve things. It’s extremely effective most of the time, if people do not wait until it’s very hard.” Dr. Coleman adds.
Go for a healthy check-up before things get complicated. Although, the relationship experts have different styles, marriage values, personalities and chemistry, do the due diligence to find the one that is right for you.
“Set up a meeting to see if the relationship expert “feels good” to you. It’s not just a person with good skill and credentials, but also if a particular relationship expert fits the couple”, Relationship expert Dr. Coleman adds.
